Dr. Chatelain joined the FCS department in August 2015. She is a Kentucky native who has over eleven years higher education experience in teaching and administrative leadership.
Dr. Chatelain’s instructional expertise focuses on fashion and apparel merchandising, cultural dress, portfolio and professional development, and introductory studies. Her teaching philosophy includes using a student-centered approach, promoting interactive classroom dialogue, creative thinking opportunities, and activity-heavy content. Dr. Chatelain was awarded second place in the International Textile and Apparel Association’s Rutherford Teaching Challenge for her essay on the flipped classroom in 2015, and was named a 2016-2017 EKU Creative and Critical Thinking Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Chatelain’s research accomplishments include publications in the Journal of Higher Education Policy & Management, the upcoming text Teaching Fashion Studies, and the web-based Brand Marketing: The Flipped Classroom. She has presented her research on student perceptions of instructor attire, entertailing, and the flipped classroom at the International Textiles and Apparel Association and the American Collegiate Retailing Association’s annual conferences. Her research has focused on Generation Y shopping behavior, and student perceptions of faculty dress and gender. Her current research focuses on perceptions of children’s dress.
