Dietetics Graduate Spotlight: Brittany Calhoun

Brittany Calhoun

Brittany Calhoun RD, LD holds a bachelor’s degree in General Dietetics from Eastern Kentucky University. She has been with the Lexington VA Health Care System for 7 years working as a Clinical Dietitian in their outpatient nutrition clinic. During her time at the Lexington VA Healthcare system she established their Healthy Teaching Kitchen, a program which uses a mobile food cart to demonstrate all steps to preparing healthy recipes from start to finish. She also has had the opportunity to work with an innovation team to develop the VA’s first ever nutrition program specifically targeting and delivering prevention education to those with stage 3 chronic kidney disease entitled Healthier Kidneys Through Your Kitchen. This program was voted into the top 15 innovation projects in the country and was signed in as an executive order by the President of the United States of America, which will soon make available in every VA health care facility across the country. It is safe to say chronic kidney disease has become one of her passions and she most enjoys providing nutrition counseling to stage 3 chronic kidney disease patients.  She loved her time and experiences at EKU.  She most enjoyed Cafe Burrier and bio-nutrition and, of couse the lifelong friendships she made along the way.  During her free time, she enjoys traveling, from scratch cooking, live music and being the doxie mom to her 12 lb. miniature dachshund Sheldon.
